The idea for the first MacRide came about in early 2005 from Rob and the Shakespokes Cycling Club - the objectives being to raise money for Macmillan (then called Macmillan Cancer Relief), stimulate cycling activity in the Stratford-upon-Avon/ South Warwickshire area . . . and create a fun event.
Over 180 riders entered in 2005 and the interest and enthusiastic feedback led to another running in early September 2006 with even more riders … and the decision to establish MacRide as an annual event was made. Yet more riders in 2007 and even with atrocious weather 2008 still attracted lots of riders.
In 2006 Macmillan had now become Macmillan Cancer Support to reflect its role as being much more than just “the nurses” but supporting cancer patients and their families in all sort of ways.
To date over £70,000 has been raised by the MacRide events, all being spent in the Coventry & Warwickshire area.
MacRide differentiates itself from many charity rides in that it runs with almost nil costs - thanks to volunteers, sponsors and supporters. Less than 5% of the entry fees are spent on costs - that means that 100% of sponsorship, donations and the jerseys (sold out for 2009 - hopefull a new one for 2010) goes to Macmillan.
From the modest beginnings with the administration being paper based we have invested time (but no money!) in technology to make it easier to enter MacRide - 2009 saw a better "online shop" with secure payment by cards or Paypal - we've made a few enhancements for 2010 ... but it works, so why change it?
